Lull in fighting between Israel, Gaza militants

JERUSALEM (AP) — A flare-up in fighting between Israel and militants from Gaza’s ruling Hamas movement has subsided.

Both sides say the government in Egypt helped to restore calm.

Israeli defense official Amos Gilad told Army Radio on Thursday that Egyptian security forces have “a very impressive ability” to convey to the militants that it is in their “supreme interest not to attack.”

Hamas spokesman Ayman Taha says Egypt conveyed Israel’s desire to contain the violence. He says Hamas told Egyptian that militants would cease fire if Israel would.

The Israeli military says militants haven’t attacked southern Israel since Wednesday night. It says the military hasn’t struck Gaza since Wednesday morning.

Militants fired some 80 rockets and mortars at Israel on Wednesday and Israeli aircraft struck four times.

“Good bacteria” during pregnancy may ward off eczema: study

(Reuters) – Babies were less likely to get the itchy skin rash eczema when their mothers took probiotics during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, according to a study from Finland.

Researchers said it’s possible that probiotics – which are thought to help balance bacteria populations in the gut and prevent disease-causing strains from spreading – may influence babies’ health through immune cells that cross the placenta and later are passed in breast milk.

“Prevention regimen with specific probiotics administered to the pregnant and breast-feeding mother, that is, prenatally and postnatally, is safe and effective in reducing the risk of eczema in infants with allergic mothers,” wrote lead author Samuli Rautava of Turku University Central Hospital, in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

For the study, Rautava and his colleagues assigned 241 pregnant women to take one of two different probiotic combinations, given as a powder mixed with water once daily, or a bacteria-free placebo powder.

All of the mothers-to-be had a history of allergies, so their babies were at extra-high risk of eczema and other allergic reactions.

The women drank their assigned concoction for the last two months of pregnancy and their first two months of breastfeeding. Researchers then tracked their babies’ health for two years to see how many developed rashes.

By the end of the study, 71 percent of babies in the placebo group had had eczema at least once, compared to 29 percent of babies whose mother took either probiotic combination.

Chronic eczema was diagnosed in 26 percent of placebo kids, compared to 10 percent and six percent, respectively, of those in the two probiotic groups.

However, by age two there was no difference in kids’ sensitivities to a range of allergens, including milk, wheat, soy and dog and cat dander, based on whether their mothers had taken the supplements. About one quarter of the children had a positive “skin prick” test for sensitivity to an allergen.

“(The study) really shows a reduction in eczema from probiotics, which is such a simple and easy intervention for mothers,’ said Ruchi Gupta, an allergy an eczema researcher at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

But she said it was still too soon to see if that reduction in eczema will be tied to a drop in asthma and more serious allergies later on, and Rautava himself said it was still not yet possible to make recommendations for routine use of probiotics.

Rautava and his colleagues didn’t find any evidence of probiotic-related side-effects, and while there have been reports of infections attributed to probiotics in babies, giving the supplements to the mothers instead may reduce that risk.

But some researchers questioned whether the supplements sold on drugstore shelves have any real health benefits, especially including all the different strains available.

“The results look encouraging, but this is a controversial area and confirmation is needed,” said James Gem, a pediatric allergy researcher from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. SOURCE: http://bit.ly/RYnbVw

South Korea economic growth slows

With presidential elections in December, the spotlight is on how to spur growth

South Korea’s economy grew at its slowest pace in nearly three years as the global slowdown hurt demand for its exports and firms cut their investment.

The economy grew at an annual rate of 1.6% in the July to September quarter. That is down from 2.3% in the previous quarter.

Compared with the previous three months, the economy expanded by 0.2%.

South Korea has cut interest rates to spur growth and the weak data may prompt it to take further measures.

Im No-Jung, chief economist at IM Investment and Securities, said the central bank may lower its rates further in the coming months as “the recent series of rate cuts have not had a profound effect on boosting the economy”.

The Bank of Korea, cut interest rates twice in the past four months. The latest of those cuts, announced earlier this month, saw the key lending rate lowered to 2.75% from 3%.

Recent stimulus measures announced by the Korean government will… kick in during the fourth quarter”

End Quote Lee Chul-Hee Tong Yang Securities

South Korea’s exports, which account for nearly half its economic output, have been hurt by a slowdown in key markets such as the US and eurozone.

Meanwhile, policymakers have found it difficult to boost domestic consumption enough to offset the decline in foreign sales.

As economic conditions in its key markets remain uncertain, South Korea has unveiled a series of measures to try and boost domestic demand.

Last month, it announced a $ 5.2bn (£3.2bn) stimulus package, which included tax breaks on personal incomes and purchases of homes and cars.

Some analysts said that the measures, coupled with the series of interest rate cuts, were likely to have a positive impact on growth in the current quarter.

“Recent stimulus measures announced by the Korean government will… kick in during the fourth quarter,” said Lee Chul-Hee, chief economist at Tong Yang Securities.

He said the economy was expected to show a 0.8% quarter-on-quarter growth in the September to December period.

Brent rises above $108 on promising US data, but Europe woes weigh

SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Brent futures rose above $ 108 on Thursday as positive economic data out of the world’s top oil consumer, the United States, revived hopes of a recovery in demand growth, although a worsening outlook for Europe capped gains.

A surge in new U.S. single-family home sales in September suggested the economy is gaining traction and closely followed data that showed No. 2 oil consumer China making a slow and steady recovery.

Additional support for oil came from continued delays in the restart of the Buzzard oilfield, Britain’s largest.

Brent crude had climbed 22 cents to $ 108.07 a barrel by 0327 GMT, snapping a seven day losing streak, the longest since July 2010. U.S. oil gained 13 cents to $ 85.86, after settling down for the fifth straight session.

“On the economic front, we have good news and bad news,” said Yusuke Seta, a commodities sales manager at Newedge Japan. “The housing data looks good, but at the same time we have very worrying news out of Europe.”

The uncertain economic outlook across the globe and swings between positive and weak data will keep Brent futures trading between $ 107.50 and $ 113 a barrel to the end of the year, Seta said.

Brent faces strong support at the lower end of that range, which is also the contract’s 100-day moving average, he added.

Oil, particularly Brent, is drawing support from maintenance-related curbs to North Sea production. The Buzzard field in the North Sea is expected to restart on October 25 or 26 as many as three days later than previously thought.

Buzzard is the largest of the fields that contribute to the Forties crude blend, the most important of the North Sea crudes underpinning the Brent crude benchmark.

“The Buzzard restart has been postponed several times and this supply problem continued to support Brent,” Seta said.

The potential threat to supply from the violence in the Middle East and Iran’s ongoing dispute with Israel and the West over its nuclear programme are also buoying oil.

SHARP STOCK RISE

Prices were under pressure from data showing U.S. crude stocks rose sharply last week as imports increased and refinery utilization fell. Stocks climbed by 5.9 million barrels, the Energy Information Administration reported. Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast an increase of 1.9 million barrels.

U.S. gasoline inventories rose by 1.44 million barrels, compared with analyst expectations for a 700,000-barrel climb. Distillate stocks, which include diesel and heating oil, fell by 646,000 barrels in the week, compared with analyst forecasts for a drop of 900,000 barrels.

“A build in crude and gasoline inventories that was greater than expected coincided with the reporting of a draw in distillate stocks that was smaller than the anticipated,” analysts at BNP Paribas said in a report.

“It leaves national crude stocks 11 percent above last year and, combined with the continuing crude overhang at Cushing (40 percent above last year), the ample crude stock position helps to weigh on crude prices,” they said, referring to the Cushing trading hub in Oklahoma.
